A Guide to the Greek Gods


In Ancient Greek mythology the Gods were responsible for creating the world and ruling it. The most famous of the Greek Gods - The Olympians - lived on Mount Olympus.

Before the rise of the Olympians the Greeks gave them their origins from Chaos, Gaea (the Earth), Eros (Desire), Uranus (the Heavens) and Pontus (the Sea). Following various battles with the Titans and the Giants, the Gods of Olympus took over the world.

There are generally held to be twelve Olympian Gods - each has his or her own characteristics.

1. Zeus was the King of the Gods and as such was perceived as the most powerful deity. His role was to control the weather - so if lightning struck, Zeus was angry.

2. Hera was the sister and wife of Zeus and as such was Queen of the Gods. Her special powers were the gift of prophesy and the ability to command the winds.

3. Aphrodite was the Goddess of love and beauty.

4. Apollo was the son of Zeus and the twin of Artemis. He was the God of music, poetry, medicine, justice and revenge. He was also held to control the sun.

5. Ares was also the son of Zeus. His role was God of War.

6. Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and the twin of Apollo. Her role was the Goddess of hunting and wild animals. She was also held to control the moon.

7. Athena was the Goddess of wisdom and war - she was also the protector of Athens.

8. Demeter was the Goddess of farming and fertility and the sister of Zeus.

9. Hephaestus was the God of Fire and Smiths and the son of Zeus. He was married to Aphrodite by his father.

10. Hermes was the God of travellers and shepherds and the messenger of the Gods. He is also the son of Zeus.

11. Hades was the brother of Zeus and Poseidon and the God of the Underworld.

12. Poseidon was the God of the sea and the brother of Zeus and Hades. He was also the God of earthquakes.
