Ancient Greek Weapons
The Ancient Greeks - although a civilised race - were well versed in military skills and brought many innovations to the art of war. The weapons that they used were key to much of their success as an empire. Typical examples include:
- The shield: Greek foot soldiers (known as hoplites) carried and used a large shield. This wasn't just for individual and group protection as they could use the shield to smash the weapons of their opponents (which were usually spears with wooden handles).
- The spear: soldiers of this period used a spear (often known as a Dory) as their primary form of attack. Spears here could be up to six or eight feet long with an iron spearhead and a bronze butt which was attached to a shaft made from wood.
- The sword/knife/dagger: it is thought that most soldiers would carry a short sword and/or a knife or dagger as well as a spear although the spear was their main weapon of choice.
- The ballista: the ballista was probably used as a siege weapon. This machine could shoot arrows for long distances.
- The catapult: the catapult was also probably more of a siege weapon. It was able to throw stones and large objects.
